Chairman’s Corner

The Ohio Section of TAPPI is presenting our first technical seminar of the year in October. The meeting is focused upon an area of concern to all papermakers: Boiler and Steam Systems. Energy costs continue to fluctuate at levels higher than they have been since the current economic downturn. Steam systems comprise one of the largest operating costs in the mill. Our speaker will share various methods of system efficiency improvement that we can all take back to our mills and implement. Thanks to Roger Bartz of RMT for putting the program together. Also, a special thanks to those organizations sponsoring our meeting.

As a special treat to all Miami University alumni, this meeting takes place during homecoming week. I would like to encourage everyone who has not recently experienced the fun of being on campus during homecoming, to join us. We are working with the MU Student Chapter of TAPPI to help get us in the spirit of the week. Specific details will be posted on the Ohio TAPPI website, as they become available. For those coming from out of town and looking for a place to stay, all of the Oxford area hotels are booked. There are rooms available, at the time of this writing in September, at the Manchester Inn in Middletown and the Hampton Inn in Fairfield. The rates range from $68.00 - $79.00.

Our next meeting will be a dinner meeting on November 11, 2002. We will once again meet at the Hamiltonian Hotel and our guest speaker will be Jerry Tater of MeadWestvaco, who will speak on "The State of the Paper Industry". It will also be Mill Managers Night, as Ohio TAPPI is inviting mill managers to be our guests at this meeting. Please check our website, www.ohiotappi.org during the coming weeks for additional information.

Please feel free call me or to contact me by e-mail and share your thoughts on the way the organization is going and what you would like to see happen or if you would like to volunteer.
